My Role: Product Manager & UX Researcher

Content: This is an intensive Hackathon organized by Novustack during the 1 month of Innovate Readiness Training.

The Prompt: The fellows presented different challenges people face and we were divided into teams to create solutions for them. We were tasked with delivering a minimum viable product (MVP) and a pitch of the solution to a group of judges.

 

Solution: My team came up with InPact. A learning management platform where learners can seamlessly get help while taking a course.

Empathizing

A fellow (Abayomi Alabi) pointed out this challenge on the first day of the Hackathon and other team members joined the address it. The team (Aspire) brainstormed on the intensified challenge, and we agreed on who our end users are (User Persona).

We then proceed to conduct primary market research (PMR) by interviewing 6 young adults who value continuous improvement in order to enhance their knowledge on the major challenges they face from taking courses online. I conducted an interview and I also took note from the next interview where we asked open-ended questions, this ensure our interviews freely express themselves which is our goal.

Key Insights from the Interviews

  • Most of our users want at least a live session with the tutor so they can ask questions pertaining to their course

  • Our users also find it very challenging to get answers when they get stuck while taking a course

  • Some complained about high data usage needed for e-learning

Define

After reviewing the information's from our PMR and processing it using the problem statement canvas as shown in the picture beside ...

My team was able to pinpoint the major challenges faced by these young learners looking to expand their knowledge. Where exactly one needs to get help when stuck and the period of time taken to get this help on a subject matter.

Ideate and Design

Innovative solutions were thought of by all the team members and over fifteen ideas were generated. Using the process of convergence, the team summarized the ideas into features that provide a viable solution. They include

  • Integration of live session

  • AI Bot for swift responses

  • Feature to schedule a call with the tutor.

Presentation

The hackathon presentation was made to Novustacks’ leaders who are experienced entrepreneurs and also judges who are experts and founders of startups.

 

The presentation started with a user story about the challenge of online learning by a group member. I followed immediately with an "underlying magic" approach to address the problem while rolling the presentation slide. The other team members also presented as we utilized the strengths of individuals in the team in all the stages including presentation. 

By the end of the presentation, my team finished at a close second place with a grade of 68 points. The judges gave us this feedback:

Good approach undergoing the development lifecycle. Appreciate the marketing structure and introducing data into making decisions.
